Get a Free QuoteWhat cinematic wedding photography actually means
The word gets used loosely enough in Chennai to be almost meaningless. Some studios mean a slow-motion clip with a filter on it. What we mean is specific: your wedding is covered with a plan, edited as a story rather than a chronology, and graded so that every photograph and every frame of film looks like it belongs to the same day.
Practically that comes down to four things. Multiple cameras with assigned roles rather than everyone shooting the same thing. Coverage planned around your ritual order, not improvised. A real colour grade applied by one person to both stills and video. And an edit that has a shape — a beginning, the moments that mattered, and an ending.
How we cover a South Indian wedding
Crew, by function
We do not send the same team to everything, because the functions are not the same problem.
- Haldi and mehendi — two photographers, both mobile. You cannot pose a haldi. The frames worth having come from people moving constantly, not from someone setting up shots.
- Engagement and sangeet — two photographers and a cinematographer. Stage-lit and formal for the first hour, then not formal at all, and the lighting has to work for both.
- Muhurtham — two photographers plus a cinematographer minimum. One locked on the couple and the ritual, one free for the family reactions, which is where the photographs you will still care about in twenty years actually are.
- Reception — three photographers for anything above 500 guests, so the stage queue never stalls and every family that waited gets a usable frame.
The early muhurtham problem
A large share of Tamil Nadu muhurtham timings fall between 4 and 7 in the morning. That means shooting a dark mandapam lit by lamps and the homam fire, and the single decision that determines whether those photographs are good is how you light it.
Direct on-camera flash is easy and it flattens everything — correct faces, black background, none of the warmth that made the room feel the way it did. We use bounced and diffused off-camera light instead, positioned before the ceremony, which is why our team arrives around three hours ahead rather than thirty minutes. There is a full write-up of how we handle dawn ceremonies here.
The sunrise handover
In the twenty minutes around sunrise the exposure changes completely, and it frequently happens mid-ceremony. We run two photographers on deliberately different setups through that window, so whatever the light does, one camera is already correct. Nobody should be adjusting settings while the thaali is being tied.
Traditions we shoot regularly
Ritual order differs enough between communities that arriving without knowing it is how photographers miss the moment. These are the ones we shoot often enough to anticipate rather than react to.
- Iyer and Iyengar — kashi yatra, oonjal, ammi midithal, saptapadi, the sub-rituals that differ between the two
- Chettinad — distinctive pandal work, jewellery traditions and a running order of its own
- Mudaliar and Nadar ceremonies
- Telugu — jeelakarra bellam, talambralu, the madhuparkam
- Nikah and Walima — including the coverage separation many families want
- Christian church weddings across Chennai's Catholic and CSI parishes, where the parish decides what the photographer may and may not do
- Malayali ceremonies — shorter, quieter, and unforgiving if you are not ready
Plus haldi and manjal neerattu vizha, sangeet, nichayathartham, reception, candid coverage and pre-wedding shoots.
Candid or traditional — the honest version
You will be asked to choose and the choice is usually presented as a style preference. It is really a coverage decision.
Traditional coverage guarantees the record: every ritual, every group photograph, every relative accounted for. Candid coverage catches what happens around the edges — your father watching, the cousins laughing at the back, the moment before the moment. Neither is complete on its own, which is why almost every package we deliver is both, with the crew split so one person is guaranteeing the record while another is hunting the rest.
If a studio offers you only candid coverage at a wedding with 200 relatives, ask who is taking the group photographs. Somebody has to, and your grandmother will notice if nobody did.
What you get, and when
- 600 to 1,000 fully edited photographs from a two-function wedding, culled from several thousand frames
- A 5 to 8 minute cinematic film and a 20 to 40 minute feature cut
- A teaser reel, usually inside 72 hours, which is what the family WhatsApp groups actually want
- One colour grade applied across the stills and the film, by one person
- An online gallery you can share, plus a printed album designed and approved before it goes to press
- Full delivery within 30 days of your last function, written into the agreement rather than promised on a website
Four to six month waits are normal in this industry. We think that is indefensible and we built the studio around not doing it.
Everything else your wedding needs
Photography is where we started and it is not where we stop. DJ and sound, drone, LED wall, stage decoration, cold sparklers, the 360 booth and the photo fridge magnet booth all come from the same team in Saligramam, on one contract.
The reason that matters is not convenience, it is timing. Your reception entry is thirty seconds involving four vendors — the track, the sparklers, the drone, the cameras. Six separate vendors improvise that. One team rehearses it. The full argument, including where booking separately is genuinely better, is here.
Cost and booking
Every quote is built from your specific wedding rather than a rate card — function count, crew size per function, whether film is included, travel and any event production you add. What sits inside each tier, what is standard and what is quoted separately are all on the pricing page.
Peak season runs November to February and popular Saturdays go three to six months ahead. WhatsApp +91 98849 60870 with your date and we will tell you the same day whether we are free — before any forms.
Cinematic Wedding Photography — FAQs
What is the difference between cinematic and traditional wedding photography?
Traditional coverage guarantees the record: every ritual, every group photograph, everyone accounted for, usually with direct flash and posed setups. Cinematic and candid coverage is planned around story — multiple cameras with assigned roles, natural light where possible, a real colour grade and an edit with a narrative shape. Most good packages include both, because candid coverage alone leaves nobody taking the family group photographs.
How many photographers will be at our wedding?
It varies by function and it is listed in your quote rather than left vague. Haldi and mehendi get two mobile photographers. A muhurtham gets two photographers plus a cinematographer minimum. A reception above 500 guests gets three photographers so the stage queue never stalls.
Do you shoot early-morning muhurthams?
Constantly — a large share of Tamil Nadu muhurtham timings fall between 4 and 7 am. Our team arrives around three hours ahead to set lighting in darkness, and we run two photographers on different exposure setups through the sunrise window so nobody is adjusting settings when the thaali is tied.
Which wedding traditions do you photograph?
Iyer and Iyengar Brahmin, Chettinad, Mudaliar, Nadar, Telugu, Muslim Nikah and Walima, Christian church weddings across Catholic and CSI parishes, and Malayali ceremonies. Plus haldi and manjal neerattu vizha, sangeet, mehendi, nichayathartham, reception and pre-wedding shoots.
How many photographs will we receive?
Typically 600 to 1,000 fully edited images from a two-function wedding, culled from several thousand frames. We would rather deliver 800 photographs you will look at than 3,000 you will not.
How soon do we get everything?
Full gallery and cinematic film within 30 days of your last function, written into the agreement. A teaser reel usually reaches you within 72 hours.
Do you cover weddings outside Chennai?
All 38 districts of Tamil Nadu, plus destination weddings elsewhere in India. Outstation travel and accommodation is quoted as a visible line before you pay any advance.
What does cinematic wedding photography cost in Chennai?
Every quote is built from your function list, the crew each function needs, whether a cinematic film is included, travel and any event production added. Send your date and function list on WhatsApp and you will have a firm itemised figure the same day.
Can we meet the team before booking?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Come to the Saligramam office or we will meet you at your venue. Ask to see a complete gallery from a wedding like yours — not a highlight selection, the full delivery, so you can judge the weak frames as well as the strong ones.
Do you provide raw files?
Yes, as a separate line on your quote, and we recommend taking them. Studios close and hard drives fail, and your raw files are the only version of your wedding that cannot be regenerated.
