What makes a Nagarathar wedding different to photograph

Three things: the setting, the jewellery, and a ritual sequence that carries elements you will not see elsewhere in Tamil Nadu.

The ancestral house

Many Chettinad families still marry in the family mansion in Karaikudi, Kanadukathan, Athangudi or one of the surrounding villages. These houses are built around open courtyards with Burma teak pillars, Athangudi tiles and enormous carved doorways, and they photograph like nothing else in the state.

They also present a specific lighting problem. The courtyard is brilliantly lit from above and the surrounding pillared corridors are deep shadow, often five or six stops darker. Exposing for one loses the other. We handle it by lighting the corridor edges rather than trying to correct it later, and by scheduling the rituals that happen under cover for the hours when the courtyard light is softer.

The jewellery

Nagarathar bridal jewellery is heavy, layered and frequently generations old. Photographing it properly needs dedicated detail work with controlled light before the bride is dressed and again once she is — the pieces are family history and families want them recorded, not glimpsed. We build a specific 20-minute slot into the schedule for this rather than snatching it.

The pandal and the ritual sequence

The pandal construction, the kalyana kacheri, the elaborate thamboolam exchanges between families and the distinctive prominence given to the bride's maternal side all differ from a standard Tamil ceremony. So does the scale of the sammandhi murai — the formal interaction between the two families — which in Chettinad weddings is genuinely a photographed event rather than a formality.

Karaikudi versus Chennai

Many Nagarathar families now hold the muhurtham at the ancestral house and the reception in Chennai, which is effectively two weddings in two cities. That needs planning: crew travel, equipment moved between locations, and a colour grade that holds together across a sunlit courtyard and a hotel ballroom.

Food, and why it matters here

Chettinad weddings take their food seriously in a way that is worth photographing properly. The kandarappam, the athirasam, the seeyam, the sequence of the meal on the vazhai ilai — these get photographed as an afterthought at most weddings and they should not be at this one. We schedule a dedicated pass over the kitchen and the serving.

Two photographers plus a cinematographer minimum, with an additional photographer for mansion weddings because the courtyard and the corridors need simultaneous coverage. Where the muhurtham and reception are in different cities, the crew and the grade stay consistent across both.
