Read this before any list
Almost every “top 10 photographers in Chennai” page you will find is written by someone with a commercial interest — a studio, or a directory paid to list them. Ours included. So rather than ask you to trust a ranking, here is the thing that actually decides your photographs, and you can apply it to anybody.
The single most useful question
“How many photographers will be at each function, and what time does your crew arrive for a 5am muhurtham?”
A studio that answers immediately — two photographers on the haldi, two plus a cinematographer on the muhurtham, three on a 600-guest reception, crew at 2.30am for a 5am ceremony — has thought about your day. A studio that says “we will send a team” has not. The gap between two Chennai quotes is usually crew size and delivery speed, not talent.
Studios worth knowing in Chennai
Alphabetical, not ranked. Everything here is from their own public pages and Google listings in August 2026, and review counts move, so check them yourself.
ASHOKARSH
Thoraipakkam. Over a decade in the Chennai market and one of the largest review counts in the city, around 725 at 4.9. A safe, established choice with a long public track record.
Focuz Studios
Kolathur. Positions on luxury and, notably, on the experience rather than only the images — coordination from first call to final album. Strong web presence and clear packaging. If a smooth, managed process matters more to you than a distinctive visual style, they are a sensible shortlist entry.
KO Studio
Premium positioning, organised around photography styles — traditional, photojournalistic, candid, fine art, vintage, black and white, editorial. Useful if you already know the look you want and want to pick by aesthetic rather than by package.
Merrygohearts
Candid and luxury coverage with a South Indian focus, plus destination work. Worth a look if you want candid-led rather than ritual-led coverage.
Pugaippadam — that is us
Saligramam. We are a wedding photography studio that also runs the rest of the production in house: film, drone, DJ and sound, LED wall, stage decoration, cold sparklers, the 360 booth, the photo fridge magnet booth, event management, hosting and gifting. Our own crews, our own equipment, one contract.
Where we are a good answer: multi-function Tamil weddings where timing cues matter, pre-dawn muhurthams, and families who do not want to project-manage six vendors. Full gallery and film in 30 days, written into the agreement.
Where we are not: if you want a single named artist whose personal style you are buying, a specialist boutique will suit you better than a production house. We also do not do catering, makeup, mehendi artists, priests or invitations.
Rohan Mishra Photography
Thazhambur. Over a decade shooting weddings, 5.0 across roughly 99 reviews, with a strongly cinematic, emotion-led approach. Frequently named in premium roundups.
Studio 31
Luxury and destination weddings, with around 18 years in the industry. If your wedding is outside Tamil Nadu or you want a studio used to working at that end of the market, they belong on the list.
Zero Gravity Photography
The largest operation in Chennai, running since 2012, covering Hindu, Christian, Muslim and destination weddings across India, the US and Europe. Enormous portfolio and the widest geographic reach of anyone here.
Zero Watts Photography
Around seven years and more than 700 reviews. Candid and traditional coverage, with a consistent, well-reviewed delivery record.
What “premium” actually buys in Chennai
The word is used loosely. In practice, paying more should get you specific, checkable things:
- More photographers per function — the single biggest difference in what you receive
- A cinematographer as well as photographers, not one person doing both
- Faster delivery — 30 days rather than four to six months, in writing
- Lighting brought and planned, especially for a dark mandapam at 5am
- A pre-production conversation about your ritual order, not a form
- Backup equipment on every booking, and a plan if someone falls ill
If a premium quote does not include those, you are paying for the word rather than the thing. Our cost guide breaks down what moves the number.
How to shortlist in an afternoon
- Pick four studios whose delivered galleries — not showreels — you like. A showreel is the best twelve frames from four years.
- Ask all four the crew-size and 5am question above.
- Ask for delivery time as a number of days, in the contract.
- Ask what happens if your date moves. Get it in writing.
- Ask to see a complete wedding in your tradition.
Any studio worth booking will answer all five without hesitating. Our booking guide has the longer version, including the red flags.
Looking for “wedding photographers near me”?
We are in Nehru Nagar, Saligramam, Chennai 600093 — within about thirty minutes of T. Nagar, Vadapalani, Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar, Porur and Mylapore, which matters when a dawn muhurtham needs the crew on site by 2.45am. We also cover all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu.
Questions people ask
Who are the best wedding photographers in Chennai?
There is no single answer, because studios are good at different things. Established names with large review counts include ASHOKARSH, Zero Gravity, Zero Watts and Rohan Mishra Photography. Focuz Studios and Studio 31 position on luxury and destination work. Pugaippadam, who wrote this page, is a production house covering photography plus DJ, drone, LED, decor and event management in house. Shortlist on delivered galleries and crew size per function rather than on any ranking.
What makes a wedding photographer premium rather than ordinary?
Checkable things: more photographers per function, a separate cinematographer, lighting planned for a dark mandapam, delivery in 30 days rather than four to six months written into the contract, a real pre-production conversation about your ritual order, and backup equipment on every booking. If a premium quote does not name those, you are paying for the word.
How do I find a good wedding photographer near me in Chennai?
Proximity matters less than you think, except for pre-dawn muhurthams where a crew has to be on site by 2.45am. Filter on whether they have shot your community's ceremony, then on crew size per function, then on delivery time. Ask to see a complete delivered gallery from a wedding like yours rather than a highlights reel.
How much do the best wedding photographers in Chennai charge?
Chennai spans a very wide range. What moves the number is the count of functions, crew size on each, whether a cinematic film is included, and whether the muhurtham is pre-dawn. Most serious studios quote each wedding individually rather than from a rate card. Our cost guide sets out every factor in detail.
Are review counts a good way to choose?
They are a reasonable proxy for volume and consistency, not for whether a studio suits your wedding. A studio with 700 reviews has clearly delivered many weddings. A studio with 30 might be newer, more selective, or simply worse at asking. Read a handful of the actual reviews rather than the number.
Should I book a big studio or a small one?
A large studio has backup crew, backup equipment and the ability to cover several functions at once. A small studio or single photographer often gives you the person whose work you actually chose. Ask a large studio who will lead your wedding and ask to see that person's work specifically.
Which studio is best for a Brahmin or traditional Tamil wedding?
Ask any shortlisted studio to show you a complete gallery from an Iyer or Iyengar wedding, not a mixed portfolio. Knowing the ritual order — kashi yatra, oonjal, ammi midithal, saptapadi — is what puts a photographer in the right place for the thaali, which is about ninety seconds in the most crowded part of the ceremony.
How far in advance should I book?
Three to six months for the November to February peak and the muhurtham clusters. Popular Saturdays in December and January go first. Off-season dates often hold with four to six weeks' notice, and Aadi and Maargazhi are easy.
