COST GUIDE
What Wedding Photography Costs in Tamil Nadu
An honest look at what drives the number, why two quotes for the same wedding can differ by a factor of five, and what is usually left out until later.

Wedding photography in Tamil Nadu spans an enormous range. A single traditional photographer covering one function and a full cinematic crew covering a three-day wedding are separated by more than twenty times in price, and both call themselves wedding photographers. That is why price comparison in this market is so difficult: the word describes two completely different jobs.
This guide explains what actually moves the number, so you can read two quotes side by side and understand why they differ.
The seven things that move the price
- Number of functions. The single largest factor. A nichayathartham, mehendi, muhurtham and reception is four separate shoots, four crew calls and four times the editing.
- Crew size per function. A haldi needs two photographers because you cannot pose a haldi. A 600-guest reception needs three or the stage queue stalls. A quote that does not state crew size per function is hiding its biggest variable.
- Whether a cinematic film is included. Film roughly doubles the work: a cinematographer on the day, then a week of edit, sound design and grade afterwards.
- Muhurtham timing. A 4am muhurtham means a 2am crew call and a team that cannot shoot a full reception the same evening without a handover. Pre-dawn weddings genuinely cost more to staff.
- Travel. Outstation work carries transport and accommodation. Ask whether it is quoted as a visible line or buried.
- Deliverables. Number of edited images, album size and page count, raw files, extra revision rounds.
- Season. November to February plus the muhurtham clusters is peak. Aadi and Maargazhi are quiet, and there is far more room to negotiate.
What gets left out of the headline number
The most common surprises, in the order families run into them:
- Album pages beyond the included count, charged per spread
- Travel and accommodation for outstation weddings
- A second or third revision round
- Raw or unedited files, if you want them at all
- Same-day edits, which need extra crew on site
- Drone, which is often quoted separately even when it was discussed
- Extra hours when the muhurtham runs late, which it usually does
None of these are dishonest on their own. They become a problem when they appear after you have paid an advance.
How to compare two quotes properly
Put them side by side and check these six lines. If a quote does not state them, that is your answer about how the rest will go.
- Crew size per function, not a total headcount
- Delivery date, as a number of days, written into the agreement
- Exactly which functions are covered and for how many hours
- Number of edited images, and whether that is a floor or a cap
- Album size, page count and what a further page costs
- Everything quoted separately, listed as separate visible lines
Where we sit
We do not publish a rate card, because we have never sent two identical quotes. A two-function wedding with a pre-dawn muhurtham and a 600-guest reception is a genuinely different job to one evening reception, and pricing them from the same table would mean overcharging one of them. Our pricing page sets out what sits inside each tier and what is quoted separately. Send your date and function list and you will have a firm itemised figure the same day.
Questions people ask
How much does a wedding photographer cost in Chennai in 2026?
The range across Chennai is very wide because the job varies so much. What decides it is the number of functions, how many photographers and cinematographers are on each one, whether a cinematic film is included, and whether the muhurtham is pre-dawn. The most useful thing you can do is ask any studio for crew size per function and delivery time in writing, then compare on those rather than on the headline figure.
Why are two quotes for the same wedding so different?
Usually crew size and delivery. One quote may staff a muhurtham with a single photographer and deliver in four months; another may put two photographers plus a cinematographer on the same ceremony and deliver in thirty days. Both are technically wedding photography. Ask for crew per function on both quotes and the difference usually explains itself.
Is candid photography more expensive than traditional?
Generally yes, because candid coverage needs more photographers moving continuously rather than one person directing groups, and it produces far more frames to cull and edit. Most families in Tamil Nadu now book both together, with traditional coverage for the ritual and family portraits and candid coverage for everything around it.
How much extra does a cinematic film cost on top of photography?
Film roughly doubles the production work — a cinematographer present on the day, then a week or more of editing, sound design and colour grading afterwards. It is the second largest line in most wedding quotes after the number of functions.
Do photographers charge more for early morning muhurthams?
They should, and honest ones say so. A 4am or 5am muhurtham means a 2am crew call, additional lighting, and a team that cannot then shoot a full reception the same evening without a handover crew. If a quote treats a dawn muhurtham the same as a mid-morning one, ask how they are staffing it.
What is usually not included in the price?
Album pages beyond the included count, travel and accommodation for outstation weddings, additional revision rounds, raw files, same-day edits, drone, and extra hours if a function overruns. Ask for all of these as separate visible lines before you pay an advance.
How much advance do photographers take?
Thirty per cent to hold a date is the common practice in Tamil Nadu, with the balance staged across the functions and final delivery. Be wary of any studio asking for the full amount before delivery.
Is it cheaper to book photography in the off season?
Yes, meaningfully. Aadi and Maargazhi see very few weddings, and dates in those months are far easier to negotiate. Peak season runs November to February plus the auspicious muhurtham clusters, and popular Saturdays in December and January go first.
Should I pick the cheapest quote?
Only if you have compared the same things. The cheapest quote is often cheap because it staffs one photographer where the function needs two, or because delivery is four to six months away. If the price difference is explained by crew and delivery, you are not comparing like with like.
Do you charge travel for weddings outside Chennai?
We cover Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram without a travel charge. Beyond that, travel and accommodation are quoted as a separate visible line rather than buried in the package price, so you can see exactly what the distance is costing.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Thirty per cent holds the date, and the balance is staged across the functions and final delivery. The schedule is written into the agreement rather than agreed informally.
What happens to my advance if the wedding is postponed?
With us the advance transfers to the new date. Ask any studio this question directly and get the answer in writing, because policies vary a great deal and it is the single most common dispute in this industry.
Is a more expensive photographer actually better?
Not automatically. Price correlates with crew size, delivery speed and equipment, which are real things, but it does not guarantee that the photographer knows the ritual order of your community. Ask to see a complete delivered gallery from a wedding in your tradition rather than a showreel.
