Aerial coverage

Drone Photography & Videography for Weddings in Chennai | Pugaippadam

Aerial coverage adds two or three shots that genuinely change a wedding film — and about forty that do not. We fly for the ones that matter and we handle the permissions, which is the part most couples do not realise is a problem.

What drone footage is actually good for

Be sceptical of any studio that promises "stunning aerials throughout". A wedding film has room for perhaps three or four aerial shots before they stop meaning anything, and the rest of the flight time is spent getting those right.

The shots that earn their place:

  • The venue reveal — one rising shot that establishes where you got married. Usually the opening frame of the film.
  • The arrival or baraat — a procession genuinely reads better from above. This is the strongest use of a drone at an Indian wedding.
  • The crowd at scale — 800 guests in a courtyard looks like 800 guests only from the air.
  • Couple portraits with landscape — beach, backwater, temple gopuram, paddy field. Works when the landscape is genuinely worth the frame and looks like showing off when it is not.

What a drone is bad at: anything indoors, anything close to guests, and the ceremony itself. Nobody wants a machine buzzing over the homam.

Permissions, honestly explained

This is the part that catches couples out. Drone flight in India is governed by the Drone Rules and the DigitalSky framework, and airspace is mapped into green, yellow and red zones. Large parts of central Chennai sit inside controlled airspace because of the airport. Many temple precincts, defence areas and government buildings have their own restrictions on top.

Practically, this means three things for you. First, your venue may simply not be flyable, and it is far better to know that now than on the morning. Second, where permission is needed, it takes time — days, not hours. Third, a studio that says "we will just fly it, nobody checks" is exposing you to your own wedding being interrupted.

We check your specific venue's airspace status before quoting rather than after, and we tell you plainly if the answer is no. We would rather lose a drone line on the quote than have a crew argued with at your mandapam.

Venues and what they mean for flying

Beach and ECR resorts

The best drone venues in the region. Open airspace, dramatic coastline, sunrise over the sea. The complications are wind — sea breeze after mid-morning gets genuinely difficult — and salt air, which is hard on equipment. We fly these early. There is more on coastal venues in our ECR muhurtham guide.

Temple weddings

Gopuram shots are spectacular and permissions are the tightest of any venue type. Temple administrations frequently prohibit aerial filming entirely, separately from any airspace question. Ask the temple, in writing, early.

City mandapams

Often not flyable at all, either because of airspace or because there is nowhere safe to launch and no useful shot to get. An honest photographer will tell you a drone adds nothing at a hall in West Mambalam.

Farmhouse and garden venues

Usually the easiest — open space, low restriction, and a genuine aerial worth having. Most of our best drone work comes from venues on the OMR, ECR and Poonamallee side.

What it costs

Drone coverage is quoted per function, and the spread depends on flight time, whether a second operator is needed, and whether airspace permissions have to be applied for. It costs less bundled with photography.

The bundled rate is lower for a simple reason: as a standalone booking we are sending a pilot and a vehicle to your venue for two hours of work. As part of a package, the pilot is already there. Full pricing on the pricing page.

Questions to ask before you pay for drone coverage

  1. "Have you checked our venue's airspace?" Before quoting, not after.
  2. "Who is flying, and are they trained?" A name and a qualification.
  3. "What is your plan if permission is refused?" There should be one, and it should involve not charging you.
  4. "How many aerial shots will actually be in the film?" A studio that says twenty has not thought about editing.
  5. "Are you insured?" Drones fail. Over a crowd that matters.

Working with the rest of the day

The drone has to be in the air before the moment it is filming, not climbing during it. At a reception entry that means the pilot is on the same cue sheet as the DJ, the sparkler operator and the camera team — one channel, one count. This is precisely the coordination that fails when four separate vendors are improvising, and it is the main practical reason we run the whole production in-house.

Send us your venue and date and we will tell you within a day whether it is flyable, what it would cost, and honestly whether it is worth it for your wedding.

Drone Photography & Videography — FAQs

How much does drone photography cost for a wedding in Chennai?

It is quoted per function on flight time, operator count and whether permissions are needed. It costs meaningfully less bundled with photography — a bundled pilot is already at your venue rather than travelling separately for two hours of flying.

Do we need permission to fly a drone at our wedding venue?

Often, yes. Indian airspace is mapped into green, yellow and red zones under the DigitalSky framework, and much of central Chennai sits in controlled airspace because of the airport. Temple precincts, defence areas and government buildings carry separate restrictions. We check your specific venue before quoting and tell you plainly if the answer is no.

Can a drone fly indoors or over the mandapam during the ceremony?

No, and it should not. Drones are unsafe over seated crowds and a machine buzzing over the homam ruins the ceremony for everyone present. Aerial work belongs to arrivals, venue establishing shots, crowd scale and outdoor portraits.

How many aerial shots will actually appear in our film?

Three or four, realistically. A wedding film has limited room for aerials before they stop meaning anything, and the flight time goes into getting those few shots right. Any studio promising twenty aerial shots has not thought about how films are edited.

Is drone coverage worth it at a city kalyana mandapam?

Usually not, and we will say so. Many city halls are either unflyable due to airspace or offer nothing worth an aerial shot. Drone coverage earns its cost at beach venues, farmhouses, temple exteriors and processions.

What happens if the weather stops the drone flying?

Wind and rain both ground a drone, and coastal sea breeze after mid-morning is the most common cause in Chennai. We fly early where possible. If we cannot fly at all on the day, the drone component is not charged.

Are your drone operators licensed and insured?

Yes on both. Trained operators and equipment insurance, which matters because a drone failure over a crowd is a genuine liability rather than a hypothetical one.
