Where a Tamil muhurtham unfolds over two or three hours with clearly separated stages, a Nair or Ezhava wedding ceremony frequently runs twenty to forty minutes end to end. The thaali is tied, the pudavakodukkal happens, the couple circle the lamp, and it is done.
Practically this means every camera position has to be decided and occupied before the ceremony begins. There is no second pass. We arrive early, walk the mandapam with the family, and lock positions rather than moving during the ceremony — movement inside a twenty-minute ceremony means missing something.
The traditions we cover
Nair and Ezhava ceremonies
Thaali kettu, pudavakodukkal (the giving of the wedding sari), and the couple circling the nilavilakku. The Kerala sari and the gold, against the white and gold of the mandapam, is a very particular palette and it grades quite differently to a Tamil wedding. Exposing for that white without losing detail in the gold is the technical challenge.
Syrian Christian weddings
The minnu tied on a thread drawn from the manthrakodi, the blessing of the couple, and a church ceremony with all the same parish considerations as any Christian wedding. Details on church coverage.
Namboothiri ceremonies
Longer, more elaborate, and with elements that differ meaningfully. We ask in advance.
The sadya
The wedding feast on the plantain leaf is a genuine photographic subject and it is treated as an afterthought almost everywhere. The sequence of serving, the arrangement on the leaf, the hands, the payasam. We schedule a dedicated pass over the sadya rather than grabbing two frames on the way past — families consistently tell us afterwards that those photographs mattered more than they expected.
Malayali families in Chennai
