What actually happens at a nichayathartham

More than couples expect, and most of it is worth photographing properly.

• The thamboolam exchange — trays of betel leaves, fruit, coconut, turmeric and gifts passed between the families. Detail-rich and deeply photographable.
• The lagna patrikai — the formal reading and signing of the wedding announcement, often by the priest and the elders of both families. This is the moment that makes the engagement official and it is frequently under-covered.
• The ring exchange — short, and the shot everyone expects.
• Blessings from elders — the couple receiving akshathai from each side. The faces here are the reason to hire two photographers.
• Family group photographs — and this is the one people undervalue.

The family portraits argument

At the muhurtham everyone is up at 3 in the morning and by the reception the queue is four hundred long. The engagement is the only function where both families are assembled, rested, well dressed and not in a hurry.

Our strong advice is to allocate 25 minutes at the engagement for proper family groups — both sides together, each side separately, the couple with grandparents, the couple with cousins. These are the photographs families print and hang, and the engagement is the only realistic window to make them well.

Lighting a stage-lit hall

Most engagements happen in a hall or a hotel banquet room with a decorated stage, and the standard problem repeats: the stage is lit for the eye and the first three rows of family are in shadow. We light for the room rather than only for the couple, because at an engagement the family reaction shots are worth as much as the ring shot.

Engagement or pre-wedding shoot?

Different things and worth doing both if the budget allows. The engagement is a family event. A pre-wedding shoot is just the two of you, on location, with time.

If you can only do one and you want photographs of the two of you, do the pre-wedding shoot — the engagement will not give you that because there are eighty relatives present. There is also a practical benefit: a couple who have done a pre-wedding shoot are visibly more relaxed in front of the same photographer on the wedding day.
