Ask five Chennai studios what a wedding costs and you will get five PDFs and no explanation. This page is the explanation. Real 2026 ranges, what sits inside each tier, which extras are legitimate and which are padding, and the specific questions that stop you overpaying.
About these figures
Everything on this page is market data — what studios across Chennai and Tamil Nadu charge in 2026 — gathered so you can read anyone's quote, including ours. It is not a Pugaippadam price list. We build every quote from the specific wedding rather than a fixed rate card. See what our tiers include or WhatsApp us for a same-day itemised figure.
Chennai wedding photography, 2026 at a glance
- Traditional coverage only: ₹25,000 – ₹60,000
- Candid photography: ₹40,000 – ₹1,00,000
- Candid + cinematic film (most couples): ₹80,000 – ₹2,00,000
- Premium studio, multi-day: ₹2,00,000 – ₹6,00,000
- Add roughly 20–35% if you want drone, same-day edit and a printed album on top
Why the range is so wide
Because "wedding photographer" describes four different jobs at four different scales.
At the bottom, one person with a camera and a flash covers your muhurtham, shoots the rituals and the group photos, and gives you 300 corrected images. That job is worth ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 and there is nothing wrong with it. Plenty of families want exactly this and are happy.
At the top, a team of six across three days produces a graded film, a printed album, aerial coverage and a same-day edit playing on an LED wall at the reception. That is a different service that happens to share a name.
Most couples want something in between and get confused because everyone in the middle uses identical vocabulary. Here is what actually differs.
Tier by tier
₹25,000 – ₹60,000: traditional coverage
One photographer, sometimes with a video assistant. Posed group photographs, ritual coverage, direct flash. You get 250 to 500 images with basic correction, usually within four to eight weeks. Album, if included, is a standard 12x18 flush-mount with 20 to 30 pages.
Right for: a single function, a modest guest list, a family that primarily wants a clear record and printed photographs. Not right for: anyone hoping for candid emotion or a film.
₹40,000 – ₹1,00,000: candid photography
Two photographers working the room, natural light where possible, off-camera flash where not. Considerably more coverage of family reactions, children, the moments between rituals. Expect 400 to 700 delivered images from a heavier shoot, with real editing rather than a batch preset.
The jump in price from traditional is not about better cameras. It is that two people are on site instead of one, and someone is spending 20 to 40 hours culling several thousand frames down to the ones worth keeping.
₹80,000 – ₹2,00,000: candid plus cinematic film
This is where the majority of Chennai weddings land. Coverage across two or three functions, two photographers plus one or two cinematographers, 600 to 1,000 edited photographs, a 5 to 8 minute cinematic film, a 20 to 40 minute feature cut, a teaser within days, and a proper colour grade applied consistently across stills and video.
At this level you should also be getting pre-production: a conversation about your ritual order, your muhurtham timing, the venue layout, where your family will be seated. If nobody asks these questions, you are paying mid-tier prices for bottom-tier planning.
₹2,00,000 – ₹6,00,000: premium
Larger crews, a director who is not holding a camera, drone as standard, same-day edits, sound recordists, hand-crafted albums, and often multi-city coverage. Justifiable for very large weddings or when the photography genuinely is the priority. Above about ₹3 lakh you are also paying for a name, which is a legitimate thing to buy but worth naming honestly.
What the money is actually spent on
Couples routinely assume they are paying for the eight hours the photographer is visible. The visible day is roughly a third of it.
| Where it goes | Share | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Crew on the day | 30–35% | Photographers, cinematographers, assistants, day rates, food, transport |
| Editing and culling | 30–40% | The biggest line and the least visible. 40–100 hours per wedding |
| Equipment | 10–15% | Bodies, lenses, lighting, gimbals, media, insurance, replacement cycle |
| Data and storage | 3–6% | Redundant backup of 2–5 TB per wedding, held for years |
| Studio overhead | 12–18% | Office, salaries through the off-season, insurance, tax |
The practical implication: a studio quoting 40 per cent below the market is not being generous, it is cutting the editing line, and editing is the difference between 800 photographs you look at once and 800 photographs you print.
Legitimate extras and what they cost in Chennai
- Pre-wedding shoot — ₹20,000 to ₹60,000. Genuinely worth it, and not only for the photographs. More here.
- Drone coverage — ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per function. Details.
- Same-day edit — ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. Only worth it if the reception is the same evening.
- Printed album — ₹15,000 to ₹80,000 depending on size, page count and cover. Ask about lay-flat versus standard binding.
- Extra photographer — ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per day. Usually the best-value upgrade available.
- Raw files — ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. Take them.
- Outstation travel — ₹8,000 to ₹25,000. Should be a visible line, not a surprise.
The costs that catch people out
Overtime. Tamil weddings run late. Every one. If the contract says eight hours with ₹5,000 per additional hour, budget for eleven hours, because that is what will happen. We price by function rather than by the hour for exactly this reason, and we would suggest you favour any studio that does the same.
Album pages. "Album included" often means 20 pages. Your wedding will want 40. The extra pages are charged per spread and it adds up faster than you would think.
Travel billed after signing. Get the outstation number before the advance, not after.
The questions that separate a good quote from a bad one
Four questions. Ask all four of every studio you shortlist.
- "Who specifically is shooting our wedding, by name?" Studios sell you a founder's portfolio and send freelancers. Names in the contract.
- "What is the written delivery deadline, and what happens if you miss it?" Four to six month waits are endemic in this city. A studio confident of 30 days will put it in writing.
- "How many hours of editing are budgeted, and how many revision rounds?" This is the question that exposes underpricing.
- "Can we see a complete gallery from a wedding like ours?" Not a highlight selection. Everything delivered from one comparable function, so you can see the weak frames too.
Where bundling changes the maths
Most Chennai couples end up hiring six vendors: photography, videography, DJ, decor, drone, and some kind of guest experience. Each quotes independently, each builds in a margin, and several of them are quietly sub-contracting to each other and marking it up.
When one team does all of it, several of those costs collapse. One transport run instead of six. One site recce. One crew call. No coordination fee. In practice, three or more services together lands meaningfully below the sum of the same services bought separately — and the colour grade matches across the photographs and the film, which two studios will never give you.
That is the model we run: photography, film, drone, DJ and sound, LED wall, decoration, cold sparklers, 360 booth and the photo fridge magnet booth, all in-house from Saligramam. What sits inside each of our tiers is set out on the pricing page, though like everyone else in this city we quote each wedding individually rather than from a fixed rate card.
How to set your own budget
A reasonable rule in Chennai: photography and film together should be somewhere between 8 and 12 per cent of your total wedding spend. Below 6 per cent you are usually buying a record rather than something you will frame. Above 15 per cent, unless photography is genuinely your priority, the money does more good elsewhere.
Two practical notes. Book early — November to February Saturdays go three to six months ahead, and late booking costs you choice, not money. And if your dates are flexible, Aadi and Maargazhi have very few weddings and studios will negotiate.
If you want a number for your specific wedding rather than a range, WhatsApp us your date, venue and function list. We reply the same day with an actual figure, not a brochure.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a wedding photographer cost in Chennai in 2026?
Basic traditional coverage runs ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. A proper candid photography plus cinematic film combination costs ₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh. Premium studios charge ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh. Most Chennai couples with two or three functions end up between ₹85,000 and ₹2.5 lakh once photography, film and delivery are included.
What is included in a ₹1.5 lakh wedding photography package in Chennai?
At that price you should expect coverage of two to three functions, two photographers plus one or two cinematographers, 600 to 1,000 edited photographs, a 5 to 8 minute cinematic film, a longer feature cut, a teaser reel, a full colour grade and delivery within 30 to 60 days. If an album is included, check the page count and whether it is lay-flat.
Why is candid wedding photography more expensive than traditional?
Candid work needs more photographers on the floor, because you cannot direct a moment you are waiting to catch, and it produces far more frames to cull and edit. A traditional photographer might deliver 300 images from a function; a candid team shoots several thousand and delivers 400 of the best. The extra cost is mostly culling and editing hours.
Should we pay extra for a pre-wedding shoot?
A pre-wedding shoot in Chennai costs ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 as an add-on. It is worth it for two reasons beyond the photographs: you find out whether you are comfortable in front of that specific photographer before the wedding, and they learn how you both move. Couples who do a pre-wedding shoot are visibly more relaxed on the wedding day.
How much advance do wedding photographers in Chennai take?
25 to 40 per cent to hold the date is standard and reasonable, with the balance staged across the functions and delivery. Be cautious of anyone asking for 70 per cent or more upfront, and never pay a full amount before delivery.
Is it cheaper to book photography and event services together?
Yes, generally 15 to 25 per cent cheaper, because a single team means one transport, one crew call, one site recce and no vendor coordinating and marking up another vendor. The saving is real, but only when the services are genuinely in-house rather than sub-contracted.
What hidden costs should we watch for?
Per-hour overtime charges (Tamil weddings always run late), travel and accommodation billed after signing, charges for raw files, extra revision rounds, and album pages beyond an unstated base count. Ask for every one of these in writing before you pay the advance.
