What candid actually means

Not "no posing." It means the photographer is documenting rather than directing — waiting for the moment instead of constructing it, working the edges of the room, and accepting that most frames will be discarded to get the few that are not.

The economics follow from that. A traditional photographer shoots perhaps 600 frames at a function and delivers 300. A candid team shoots several thousand and delivers 400. The extra cost is not better cameras, it is 20 to 40 hours of culling and editing. Any studio quoting candid coverage well below market is cutting that, and culling is precisely where the value is.

The honest limitation

A purely candid team at a Tamil wedding with two hundred relatives will not produce the family group photographs, and your grandmother will notice.

This is the thing couples find out afterwards. Candid coverage is genuinely better at emotion, reaction and the moments between rituals. It is structurally bad at guaranteeing that every uncle got a photograph, because guaranteeing that requires someone to stop and organise people, which is the opposite of candid.

So we split the crew. One photographer guarantees the record — rituals, groups, the formal coverage. The other hunts. That is how almost every package we deliver is built, and if a studio is offering you candid-only at a large family wedding, ask them directly who is taking the group photographs.

What candid coverage is genuinely better at

• Parents and grandparents watching — the reaction shots, which are the photographs people cry at years later.
• Children, who ignore instructions and are better for it.
• The gaps between rituals, where families actually behave like families.
• The kashi yatra and similar theatre, where the photograph is the audience, not the participant.

How to judge a candid photographer

Showreels are useless here, because a showreel is the best twelve frames from four years of work. Ask instead for a complete delivered gallery from one wedding comparable to yours — everything they handed over, not a selection.

What you are looking for in that full gallery: consistency across the weak frames as well as the strong ones, whether the family group photographs are actually there and usable, and whether the emotional moments are of your kind of family or only of the couple.
