Why haldi produces the best candid photographs of the wedding

Every other function has a script. The haldi does not. It is the one morning where the family stops behaving formally, cousins conspire, someone's uncle gets ambushed, and children run through the middle of everything covered in turmeric.

Which means it needs to be shot as reportage. Two photographers, both mobile, neither of them stopping to arrange anyone. A photographer who spends the haldi asking people to pose is producing a worse version of the reception.

The practical problems

Turmeric destroys equipment

It is a fine powder that gets everywhere and it is genuinely corrosive on lens contacts and sensor housings. We shoot haldis with covered bodies, we do not change lenses in the open, and everything is stripped and cleaned the same night. Photographers who treat a haldi casually damage gear and it shows in the shots because they start standing further back.

Hard mid-morning light

Most haldis happen outdoors or in a courtyard between 9 and 11 in the morning, which is the harshest light of the day. Contrasty, unflattering, and it blows out the yellow badly. We work the shade edges, use a diffuser where there is a fixed setup, and expose for skin rather than for the turmeric.

Yellow everywhere

Turmeric reflects a strong yellow-green cast onto everything including faces. Left uncorrected everyone looks jaundiced; over-corrected and the turmeric turns grey and the whole point of the function disappears. Getting this right in the grade is a real skill and it is why haldi photographs from cheaper studios often look either sickly or washed out.

What to actually plan for

• Do it outdoors or near a large window if you can. Indoor haldis under tube lighting are much harder and look it.
• Let it be messy. The couples who tell everyone to go easy get polite photographs. The ones who let the cousins loose get the pictures they actually frame.
• Allow 20 minutes at the end for portraits of the bride or groom covered in turmeric, before they wash it off. These are frequently the strongest single portraits of the entire wedding and they are constantly skipped because everyone is in a hurry.
• Keep the phones back during the main application. Not for our sake — for yours.

Where it sits in the wedding

Usually the morning before the muhurtham, sometimes the same day as the sangeet or mehendi. Where it is on a separate day it is a separate function in the package; where it runs into another function on the same day we crew for both together, which is cheaper for you.
