Your guests pose, and forty seconds later they are holding a printed fridge magnet of themselves with your names and your wedding date on it. It goes on their fridge that night and it is still there in five years. No return gift does that.
We added the magnet booth in 2026 after watching the same thing happen at reception after reception in Chennai. The return gift table would be stacked with identical boxes, guests would collect one on the way out, and half of those boxes would be sitting unopened in a cupboard by the following weekend. Meanwhile the 360 booth queue would be forty people deep, because people want a thing with themselves in it.
A photo fridge magnet is the cheapest way we know to give a guest something they will actually keep. It costs less than most return gifts in this city, it takes under a minute, and it puts your name on a fridge door in a hundred and fifty homes.
What exactly is a photo fridge magnet booth?
It is a small, staffed print station. A camera on a stand, a backdrop or a nice section of your existing decor, a tablet for selection, and a dye-sublimation printer on a covered table. Guests walk up, get photographed, pick their favourite of four frames, and walk away holding a laminated magnet roughly the size of a playing card, printed with a border carrying your names, your wedding date and usually a motif lifted from your invitation card.
The important word is instant. This is not the arrangement where a photographer takes pictures and you send magnets by courier three weeks later. The magnet is in the guest's hand before they sit down for dinner, which is the entire reason it works as a favour.
Why dye-sublimation matters more than you would think
Most cheap photo-booth outfits in Chennai run inkjet prints and stick them on adhesive magnet sheet. It looks fine on the night. Six months later, in a kitchen with a gas stove three feet away and eleven months of coastal humidity, the cyan has shifted and the corners have lifted.
Dye-sublimation is a heat process: the dye becomes a gas and bonds into a polymer coating on the paper, then the printer lays a clear protective layer over the top in a separate pass. The print comes out dry, waterproof and touch-safe. We use 0.6 mm flexible magnetic backing, which is thick enough to hold on a fridge with a wedding invitation underneath it and thin enough not to curl.

Where it fits in a Tamil wedding running order
We have run this at muhurthams, receptions, sangeets and one very good mehendi. The booth earns its money in different ways depending on where you place it.
Reception — the obvious slot
This is where nine out of ten couples put it, and they are right. Set the booth near the exit path or beside the dining entrance and it catches guests during the long stretch between the stage queue and dinner, which is otherwise the deadest part of a Chennai reception. Guests who have already done the stage photo and are looking for something to do will find it. Plan for the booth to run from about thirty minutes after the doors open until the food line thins out.
Muhurtham morning — underrated
Morning muhurthams at kalyana mandapams have a lull after the thaali and before lunch when the older relatives are seated and the younger crowd is standing around. A magnet booth in that window works beautifully, and you get magnets of the guests in full traditional dress rather than in reception outfits. If your budget only stretches to one booth session and you are having both functions, we quietly recommend the muhurtham.
Sangeet and mehendi
Smaller guest counts, so the booth is less about throughput and more about props and mood. We bring a lighter setup and a warmer border design for these.

What it costs in Chennai
Magnet booth rental is quoted on three things: how many hours you want the booth live, how many magnets you want printed, and whether the venue is inside the city or outstation. Volume matters most — the per-magnet cost falls significantly at higher print counts.
A typical Chennai reception with 500 to 700 guests takes a three-hour session with around 250 magnets, an operator team of two, custom border design and the digital files. On a per-guest basis that lands well below what most families spend on a return gift.
Compare that with the return gift line in a Chennai wedding budget, which climbs fast for anything families are happy to hand over. Plenty of our couples now run the magnet booth instead of a second return gift rather than in addition to one.
If you are already booking us for photography, the booth is bundled at a reduced rate, because our team is at the venue anyway and there is no separate transport, setup crew or coordination cost. That is the whole point of running event production under one roof — you are not paying three vendors to each build in their own margin for turning up.

We rent all three, so we have no reason to push you towards one. They do genuinely different jobs.

The honest recommendation, if you have room in the budget for two: run the 360 booth for the reach and the magnet booth for the keepsake. They pull different crowds and the queues do not compete. If you can only have one and your guest list skews older or family-heavy, take the magnet booth.
Practical things couples get wrong
Placing the booth too far from the action
Venue managers love to put booths in a side hall where they are out of the way. Guests then never find them and you have paid for a booth that printed ninety magnets instead of two hundred and sixty. Put it on the walking route between the stage and the dining hall. We will argue for this on the day if we have to.
Ordering by guest count instead of by group
Nobody comes to a magnet booth alone. Divide your confirmed count by 2.5, not by 1.
Approving the border design at the last minute
The border carries your names and date in a font that has to be legible at 2.5 inches. We need it signed off at least four days ahead so the template is loaded and test-printed before we load the van.
Sharing the power line with the DJ
Print heads and 5,000-watt sound systems on the same circuit is a bad idea. One dedicated 15-amp point. We bring our own UPS but we would rather not lean on it.
Venues we have run the booth at
We work across Chennai regularly — kalyana mandapams in Mylapore, T. Nagar, Adyar and Saligramam, hotel banquets in Guindy and Nungambakkam, and beach-resort receptions down the ECR towards Mahabalipuram. Outdoor and semi-outdoor venues need a covered print table because the printer does not like humidity or direct sun on the media path, and we bring that as standard on any ECR or beach booking.
Outside Chennai we regularly take the booth to Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Salem. Outstation bookings carry a travel and accommodation component, which we quote openly rather than hiding inside the package price.

How long does one photo fridge magnet take to print?
About 40 to 50 seconds from the moment the guest poses. The camera fires, the guest picks a frame on the tablet, and the dye-sublimation printer delivers the magnet dry and ready to hold. In practice the queue moves at roughly 60 to 80 guests an hour per booth.
How many magnets should we order for a Chennai reception?
Count your confirmed guest list and divide by 2.5. Most people come to the booth in pairs or family groups rather than alone, so a 600-guest reception typically consumes 220 to 260 magnets. We usually supply a 10 per cent buffer at no extra cost because the last hour is always busier than couples expect.
What size are the magnets and will they survive on a fridge?
The standard magnet is 2.5 x 3.5 inches on 0.6 mm flexible magnetic sheet with a laminated photo face. The lamination is what matters: an unlaminated inkjet print will fade in a Chennai kitchen within a year. Ours are dye-sublimation prints, so the dye is inside the coating, not sitting on top of it.
Can we put our names and wedding date on the magnet?
Yes, and you should. The border template is designed before the event with your names, the date and usually a kolam or floral motif that matches your invitation. We send you two or three design options about a week before the function for approval.
How much space does the magnet booth need at the venue?
Roughly 10 x 8 feet: a backdrop, a camera on a stand, and a print table. If the hall is tight we can run a backdrop-free version against an existing decor wall, which we often do at mandapams in Mylapore and T. Nagar where floor space is genuinely scarce.
Does the booth need a dedicated power point?
One 15-amp point close to the print table. The printer draws the most current during the thermal cycle, so we ask venues not to share that line with the DJ rig or the LED wall. We carry a UPS for the print station because a power dip mid-print wastes a sheet.
Do we also get the digital copies of the booth photos?
Every frame shot at the booth is delivered in the main gallery alongside your wedding photographs. Guests can also receive their own image on WhatsApp at the booth if you want that switched on.
Is a photo magnet booth cheaper than traditional return gifts?
Usually, yes. Per guest it lands well below a mid-range return gift, and the gap widens at higher print volumes. Unlike a silver coin or a dry-fruit box it has the guest’s own face on it, which is why it actually gets kept.
Can we book the magnet booth without booking your photography?
Yes. It is available as a standalone rental across Chennai and most of Tamil Nadu. That said, about eight in ten bookings come from couples who already have us on photography, because the booth photos then land in the same gallery and the same team handles the setup.
What happens if the printer fails on the night?
We carry a second printer and a spare media cartridge to every event, on every booking, without exception. This is not an upsell, it is the only sane way to run a live print service. If both fail, which has not happened yet, we shoot the frames anyway and courier the printed magnets to your home address within a week.
