HALF SAREE FUNCTION
Half Saree Function Photography
Langa voni, pavadai dhavani, ritu kala samskaram — whichever your family calls it. Shot by a team that knows the order the rituals come in.

A half saree function is not a small wedding. It is its own thing — almost entirely women, emotionally loaded in a way people outside the family often underestimate, and over faster than anyone expects. Photograph it like a scaled-down reception and you will come away with a set of pretty portraits and none of what actually happened.
The names, because families use different ones
Langa voni in Telugu. Pavadai dhavani or pattu pavadai dhavani in Tamil. Langa davani in Kannada. Ritu kala samskaram or ritushuddhi in Sanskrit. Most families simply say half saree ceremony. Same celebration, and the ritual order differs between them, which is the part that matters to us.
What we shoot, and why
- Getting ready. The quietest and often the best part — mother, aunts, cousins, and a girl who is nervous. One photographer stays here throughout.
- The voni draping. The moment of the whole day. It happens once, usually quickly, and there is no second take. Position is decided before it starts, not when it starts.
- The aarti and the blessings. Elders, one after another. This is where the grandparents appear, and those frames are the ones families keep longest.
- The first full portrait. Once she is completely dressed. This is the photograph that gets framed and put on a wall, so we protect proper time for it rather than snatching it between rituals.
- The room. A second photographer works the guests continuously, because a half saree function is a gathering of women who mostly do not get photographed together otherwise.
Two photographers, not one
One person cannot hold the ritual and the room at the same time. The draping and the blessings need someone locked in position; the candid material needs someone moving. Studios that quote a single photographer for a half saree function are quoting for a portrait session, not for the event.
The trailer matters more than you think
What families actually share is a one to two minute cinematic trailer — it goes to relatives who could not attend, often abroad, within days. We treat it as a main deliverable rather than an extra, and it usually reaches you inside 72 hours. The full gallery and the longer ritual cut follow within 30 days, written into the agreement.
Everything else for the day, in house
Stage and floral decoration, sound, the photo magnet booth so guests leave with something, and return gifts — all our own crew and equipment. The decor is designed against the camera plan, which is why the stage photographs as well as it looks.
Where we work
Chennai and all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. If your function is outstation, the crew travels the day before rather than driving through the morning, and travel is quoted as a separate visible line.
Questions people ask
What is a half saree function called in other languages?
Langa voni in Telugu, pavadai dhavani or pattu pavadai dhavani in Tamil, langa davani in Kannada, and ritu kala samskaram or ritushuddhi in Sanskrit. In English most families simply say half saree ceremony or half saree function. They are all the same celebration.
How many photographers does a half saree function need?
Two for most. One stays with the girl through the getting-ready, the voni draping and the ritual; the second works the room, because the guests at a half saree function are almost entirely women and the candid material among them is the best part of the day.
What are the moments that must not be missed?
The voni or dhavani being draped for the first time, usually by the mother or aunts. The aarti. The blessing from the elders. And the first portrait once she is fully dressed — that is the photograph the family frames. We agree the ritual order with the family beforehand rather than guessing on the day.
Do you photograph both Telugu langa voni and Tamil pavadai dhavani ceremonies?
Yes, and the order differs. Telugu families often include a more elaborate seating and blessing sequence; Tamil pavadai dhavani functions are frequently shorter and run closer to a nichayathartham in structure. We ask which tradition and which family variation before the day.
Can you cover the function and the reception the same day?
Yes. Many families hold the ritual in the morning and a reception in the evening. We crew both, and we plan the lighting separately, because a mid-morning ritual and an evening stage are two different jobs.
Do you offer video as well as photographs?
Yes — a cinematic trailer of one to two minutes for sharing, and a longer cut of the ritual. The trailer is what families actually send to relatives, so we treat it as the main deliverable rather than an add-on.
What about decor, DJ and a photo booth for the function?
All in house. Stage and floral decoration, sound, and the photo magnet booth are ours, so the decor is designed against the camera plan and everything runs on one cue sheet. Nothing is sub-hired.
How soon do we get the photographs?
Full edited gallery within 30 days, and a teaser usually within 72 hours for the family WhatsApp groups. That is written into the agreement, not promised on a website.
How far ahead should we book?
Six to eight weeks is comfortable. Half saree functions cluster around auspicious dates in the same way weddings do, so popular days go early.
Do you travel outside Chennai for half saree functions?
Yes, across all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. Travel and accommodation are quoted as a separate visible line rather than folded into the price.
