Everything else at a reception is secondary to this: every family who stands in that queue expects a photograph with the couple, and every one of those photographs needs to be usable. Not artistic. Usable — everyone's eyes open, nobody cut off at the edge, the couple not looking exhausted in all four hundred of them.
That is a throughput problem. A single photographer on the stage will stall the queue, and a stalled queue at a Chennai reception becomes a genuinely unhappy room. Above 500 guests we put three photographers on: one working the stage continuously, one on candid coverage of the floor, one moving between the entrance, the dining hall and the family tables.
Stage lighting is not optional
Most halls light the stage for the eye, not the camera, and the result is a beautifully lit backdrop with the couple's faces in shadow. If there is an LED wall behind them it is worse, because a bright screen behind two people is a backlight.
We bring our own key light for the stage and, where the LED wall is ours too, we drop its brightness during stage photography. That coordination is only possible when the same company runs both, which is one of the clearer arguments for keeping production in one place.
The entry
Thirty seconds involving four teams — the DJ hits the track, the cold sparklers fire, the drone is already airborne if it is flying, and the cameras are positioned. The timing window on the sparklers is about two seconds wide.
We run it off one cue sheet on one radio channel, with a four-minute rehearsal before doors open. Separate vendors improvise it, which is why so many reception entry videos show the couple arriving three steps after the effect peaked.
The dead hour, and what to do with it
There is a long stretch at every Chennai reception between the stage queue thinning and dinner properly starting where several hundred guests have nothing to do. This is the single most under-planned part of the evening.
It is exactly the window a photo fridge magnet booth or a 360 booth fills. Placed on the walking route between stage and dining, a booth turns dead time into the thing guests talk about afterwards. Placed in a side hall because the venue manager wanted it out of the way, it prints ninety magnets instead of two hundred and sixty. Placement decides everything and we will argue for it on the day.
Speeches, and why they are inaudible in most wedding films
Because nobody ran a dedicated audio feed. A camera microphone twenty feet from a speaker in a hall with six hundred people picks up the room, not the words. The fix is a feed from the sound desk straight to the video team, which costs nothing and is skipped constantly. If you are hiring your DJ separately from your videographer, ask both about this explicitly.
Group photographs
Do them early, not at midnight. The standard mistake is leaving family groups until after dinner, by which point half the people on the list have left and the couple look shattered. We suggest a 20-minute block shortly after the stage queue starts thinning, with a named person from the family calling groups — that one person is worth more than an extra photographer.
How we crew this function
Three photographers above 500 guests, two below, plus a cinematographer. We bring our own stage key light rather than relying on the hall's, and the entry sequence is rehearsed with the DJ, sparkler and drone teams on one cue sheet.
What you get
- Fully edited high-resolution gallery, culled properly rather than dumped
- Cinematic film and feature cut where the package includes film
- Teaser reel usually inside 72 hours
- One colour grade across stills and video, applied by one person
- Full delivery within 30 days of your last function — a clause in the agreement, not a promise on a website
Cost and booking
Every quote is built from your specific wedding rather than picked off a rate card. What sits inside each tier, what is included as standard and what is quoted separately are all set out on the pricing page, and there is a wider market guide to Chennai wedding photography costs if you want to understand what drives price across the city before you talk to anyone.
We also run DJ and sound, drone, LED wall, stage decoration, cold sparklers, the 360 booth and the photo fridge magnet booth in-house. Every one of these is delivered by our own crew on our own equipment. Nothing is sub-hired, so the standard does not change from one part of the day to the next.
Peak season runs November to February and popular dates go three to six months ahead. WhatsApp +91 98849 60870 with your date and we will answer the same day.
Reception Photography — FAQs
How many photographers do we need for a reception?
Three above 500 guests: one working the stage queue continuously, one on candid floor coverage, one moving between the entrance, dining hall and family tables. A single photographer on the stage stalls the queue, and a stalled queue at a Chennai reception makes for an unhappy room.
Why do reception stage photos often look badly lit?
Because halls light the stage for the eye rather than the camera — a beautifully lit backdrop and the couple's faces in shadow. An LED wall behind them makes it worse, since a bright screen is effectively a backlight. We bring our own key light for the stage and, where the LED wall is ours, drop its brightness during stage photography.
When should we do family group photographs?
Shortly after the stage queue starts thinning, in a 20-minute block — not after dinner. Leave them late and half the people on the list have gone home and the couple look exhausted. Nominate one family member to call the groups; that person is worth more than an extra photographer.
Why are speeches inaudible in most wedding films?
Because nobody ran a dedicated audio feed from the sound desk to the video team. A camera microphone twenty feet away in a hall of six hundred picks up the room, not the words. It costs nothing to fix and is skipped constantly.
What should guests do between the stage queue and dinner?
This is the most under-planned stretch of a Chennai reception. A photo magnet booth or a 360 booth placed on the walking route between stage and dining turns that dead time into the thing guests talk about. Placement matters enormously — a booth in a side hall reaches a third of the people it should.
How soon will we get our photographs and film?
Full gallery and cinematic film within 30 days of your last function, written into the agreement. A teaser reel usually reaches you within 72 hours.
How much does this coverage cost?
Every quote is built from your specific wedding — function count, crew size per function, travel and any event production you add. Send your date and function list and you will have a firm itemised figure the same day.
Do you travel outside Chennai for this?
Yes, all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu plus destination weddings. Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram are treated as local. Other districts carry a visible travel and accommodation line quoted before you pay any advance.
