Mahabalipuram is the closest destination to Chennai — about an hour down the East Coast Road from our studio in Saligramam — which makes it the most popular choice for families who want a beach wedding without asking guests to fly. Most weddings here are at the beach resorts along ECR, with the ceremony on a lawn facing the sea and the reception after sunset.
The coast decides everything here. Sea breeze moves decor and veils, salt spray settles on lenses and flowers, and the sun rises directly out of the Bay of Bengal, so a sunrise muhurtham on the beach is spectacular and also very bright. We plan the mandap orientation and camera positions around the sunrise direction, and keep a shaded position for elders.
For portraits, the monuments are the obvious backdrop — the Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance and the Five Rathas. They are protected heritage sites, so photography is fine for visitors but formal shoots, tripods and drones need prior permission. Ask about that early rather than on the day.
