What If a Camera or Memory Card Fails at Your Wedding?

By Pugaippadam Photography · October 22, 2026 · Chennai, Tamil Nadu

What protects your photographs

  • On the day: a second camera body for every shooter, spare lenses, batteries and cards — on site, not at the studio.
  • While shooting: cameras that write every photograph to two cards at once.
  • After the shoot: cards are not wiped until the files exist in two separate places.
  • Long term: two independent copies, one away from the studio.
  • The test: ask the studio to describe this in their own words. A professional answers immediately.

It does happen

Equipment failure at weddings is not a theoretical risk. Shutters fail after hundreds of thousands of frames, lenses get knocked off tables during the reception rush, memory cards corrupt, and hard drives die without warning. A wedding cannot be reshot, so the only question is whether the photographer planned for it.

Most of the protection is invisible to you on the day. That is why it is worth asking about before you book.

On the day: redundancy you can see

  • Second bodies. Every photographer should have a spare camera within reach, not one shared spare for the team.
  • Spare lenses, flashes and batteries for the length of a Tamil wedding, which always runs late.
  • More than one person. With two photographers at the muhurtham, a failure on one camera does not mean a missing ritual.
  • Power. Pre-dawn muhurthams and outdoor venues often have unreliable power. Charging should be planned, not improvised.

We carry backup equipment on every booking. Cameras fail, cards fail and lenses get knocked, and a studio without a second body is taking a risk with your wedding rather than its own.

While shooting: two cards, not one

Most professional cameras can write each photograph to two memory cards at the same time. If one card corrupts, the identical file exists on the other. It is the single most effective protection against losing a ritual you cannot repeat, and it costs the photographer almost nothing. Ask whether every camera at your wedding records to two cards.

Card handling matters too. Full cards should go into a labelled case on the photographer's person, not a bag left at the mandapam.

After the wedding: where your files live

The riskiest period is the few days after the wedding, when the only copies may be on the cards themselves. A careful studio copies the cards to two separate drives before any card is formatted for the next job, then keeps two independent copies — one away from the studio — for years.

Single-copy storage on one drive is a genuine risk to your wedding photographs and it is more common than you would like. Once your gallery arrives, download everything and keep your own copy in two places as well.

If someone falls ill

People fail as well as cameras. A studio with crew on its own payroll can send a replacement photographer; a single freelancer often cannot. Our crew is on our payroll, so a replacement comes from the same team, briefed from the same plan.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a wedding photographer's camera fails?

A professional photographer switches to a second camera body carried on site, and with two photographers covering the key rituals no moment depends on a single camera. Ask any studio whether every shooter has a spare body at the venue.

Can wedding photos be lost if a memory card fails?

They can, if the camera records to a single card. Professional cameras can write every photograph to two cards at once, so a corrupted card does not lose the image. Ask whether every camera at your wedding records to two cards.

How do wedding photographers back up photos?

Good practice is to copy the cards to two separate drives before any card is reused, and to keep two independent copies long term, one of them away from the studio.

How long should a photographer keep our wedding photos?

Policies vary, so ask before booking. Whatever the studio's policy, download your full gallery as soon as you receive it and keep your own copy in two places.

Does Pugaippadam carry backup equipment?

Yes, on every booking. Cameras fail, cards fail and lenses get knocked, so spare bodies and equipment are on site at every wedding, and with crew on Pugaippadam's own payroll a replacement photographer can be sent if someone falls ill.
