If you are trying to work out what a cinematic wedding film should cost in Tamil Nadu, you have probably already discovered the problem: almost nobody publishes numbers. You fill in a form, you wait a day, and you get a PDF with three package names and no explanation of why one is ₹90,000 and the next is ₹2.1 lakh.
So here are the numbers. Everything below is 2026 market data for Tamil Nadu as a whole — what studios across the state are charging, not our own rate card. We quote each wedding individually and do not publish a fixed price list. What this page will do is explain what actually drives the difference — because once you know that, you can read any quote in the state and tell whether it is fair.

The short answer
- Single function (engagement, reception or muhurtham alone): ₹60,000 – ₹1,20,000
- Full wedding, two to three functions: ₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000
- Premium multi-day with drone, gimbal team and same-day edit: ₹3,00,000 – ₹6,00,000
- Chennai is the most expensive district. Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy run roughly 15–20 per cent below Chennai rates.
- Post-production hours, not camera bodies, explain most of the gap between two quotes.
What you are actually paying for
Couples assume they are paying for shoot day. You are not, mostly. A two-function Tamil wedding involves perhaps 22 hours on site. The film that comes out of it involves 80 to 140 hours of work. Here is roughly where the money in a ₹1.6 lakh package goes.

Notice the second row. Post-production is the single biggest line and it is also the least visible one, which is exactly why it is where corners get cut. A studio quoting ₹75,000 for a full wedding film is not using worse cameras than a studio quoting ₹1.8 lakh. It is budgeting a fraction of the edit time.
Tier by tier, with real numbers
₹60,000 – ₹1,20,000 — single function, one or two cameras
At this level you get one cinematographer, sometimes two, covering one function. Expect a 3 to 5 minute highlight film and a 30 to 45 minute long cut. Colour correction rather than a full grade. Music from a licensed library. Delivery in six to ten weeks is typical at this price.
This tier is perfectly reasonable for an engagement or a standalone reception. It is thin for a muhurtham, because one camera cannot cover the thaali and the mother's face at the same moment, and the mother's face is the shot you will want in ten years.
₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000 — the working majority
This is where most Tamil Nadu weddings land. Two cinematographers across two or three functions, a gimbal, proper on-camera and ambient audio, a 5 to 8 minute cinematic film, a 20 to 40 minute feature cut, a teaser for social media, and a full colour grade rather than a filter.
At this level you should also be getting a pre-production conversation — someone asking about your ritual order, whether your muhurtham is at 5.40 in the morning, whether the mandapam has a balcony, whether your grandmother is likely to be seated or standing. If nobody asks these questions before your wedding, the quote is high for what you are getting.
₹3,00,000 and above — large-format
Three or more cinematographers, a dedicated drone unit, jib or slider work, a sound recordist, a same-day edit team, and a director who is not holding a camera. This makes sense for weddings above 1,000 guests, multi-city celebrations, or when the film is genuinely the centrepiece rather than a record.
What legitimately costs extra
Some add-ons are real costs and some are invented. These are the real ones.
- Drone coverage — ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per event depending on flight time and whether the venue needs permissions. Beach and temple venues in Tamil Nadu often do. More on drone coverage.
- Same-day edit — ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. An editor and a machine sit at your venue for the entire function.
- Outstation travel — ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 depending on distance and crew size. Ask for this as a visible line. A studio that hides it inside the package is hiding other things too.
- Additional cinematographer — ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 per day. Usually the best value add-on on the entire list.
- Raw footage on a drive — ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. Worth taking. Studios go out of business and hard drives fail.
- Extra revision rounds — most packages include two. A third typically costs ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.
And the ones that are usually padding
Charging separately for "4K delivery" in 2026 is padding; every current camera shoots 4K. So is charging for "cinematic colour grading" as an add-on when the package is already sold as cinematic. And be careful with packages that quote a low headline and then charge per additional hour on the day — Tamil weddings run late, always, and that meter is how a ₹90,000 package becomes ₹1.4 lakh.

One caution on the cheaper districts: if you book a Chennai studio for a Madurai wedding, you pay Chennai rates plus travel. If you book locally, verify that "cinematic" means an actual graded film and not a traditional edit with a slow-motion effect applied.
The question that tells you most about a quote
Ask this: "How many hours of editing are budgeted for our film, and how many revision rounds do we get?"
A studio that has thought about its costs will answer immediately — something like "about 60 hours across the highlight and the feature cut, two revision rounds included." A studio that has not will change the subject to camera equipment. In our experience that single question separates the market more reliably than any showreel, because showreels are made from the best three weddings anyone ever shot.
Three more worth asking
- "Who is actually shooting our wedding?" Large studios sell you a founder's showreel and send a freelance crew. Get names in the contract.
- "What is the written delivery deadline?" Not "usually about two months." A date, in the agreement, with what happens if it slips.
- "Can we see a full film, start to finish, from a wedding like ours?" Not a highlight reel. A complete film from a comparable function.
Where photography and film pricing overlap
Most Tamil Nadu couples book photography and videography together, and there is a reason beyond convenience. When one team does both, the photographers and the cinematographers are not fighting for the same position at the thaali moment, and the final photographs and the final film share a colour grade. Book two studios and you will often get two visibly different weddings back — one warm, one cool, same day.
Across the Chennai market, combined photo-and-film packages are consistently cheaper than buying the two separately, and the gap is wide enough to be worth asking about explicitly when you compare quotes. A note on booking timing and money
Peak season in Tamil Nadu runs November to February, with clusters around auspicious muhurtham dates. Good cinematographers for peak Saturdays are gone three to six months ahead. Aadi and Maargazhi see very few weddings, so if your dates are flexible you can often negotiate meaningfully in those months.
On payment: an advance of 25 to 40 per cent to hold a date is standard and reasonable. Anyone asking for 70 per cent upfront should explain why. Get the delivery deadline, the crew names, the deliverables list and the cancellation terms in writing before you pay anything.

Is a same-day edit worth the extra cost?
A same-day edit costs ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 extra because an editor works on site through the function. It is worth it if you have a reception the same evening as the muhurtham and an LED wall to play it on. If your reception is on a different day, spend the money on a second cinematographer instead.
How many cinematographers do we need?
One cinematographer can cover a small engagement or a mehendi. A muhurtham needs two: one locked on the couple and the ritual, one free to cover family reactions and wide shots. A 600-plus guest reception needs two as a minimum and three if you want proper stage-queue coverage plus the dance floor.
Why do wedding film quotes vary so much between studios?
Mostly post-production. Two studios can shoot with identical cameras and quote ₹80,000 apart because one is budgeting forty hours of editing, grading and sound design per film and the other is budgeting eight. Ask any studio how many hours of edit time are in the quote and how many revision rounds you get. The answers separate the market faster than any showreel.
When should we book a cinematographer for a Tamil Nadu wedding?
Three to six months ahead for November to February dates. Good cinematographers in Chennai are booked out for peak Saturdays before the year turns. Off-season, four to six weeks is usually enough.
