Golden Hour in Chennai: Best Times for Wedding & Pre-Wedding Photos

By Pugaippadam Photography · October 22, 2026 · Chennai, Tamil Nadu

What to know

  • Chennai's golden hour is about 30 minutes, not an hour. Close to the equator the sun rises and sets steeply.
  • Morning golden light runs from sunrise to roughly half an hour after it — between about 5:45 and 7:05 am depending on the month.
  • Evening golden light starts roughly 30 minutes before sunset — between about 5:10 and 6:40 pm.
  • Best months for outdoor shoots: November to February — cooler, and the light stays soft longer in the morning.

Why golden hour is shorter in Chennai

Most photography advice is written for Europe and North America, where "golden hour" really is about an hour. Chennai sits at about 13° north. Near the equator the sun climbs and falls steeply, so the warm, low-angled light lasts only about 28 to 32 minutes after sunrise and before sunset, all year round.

Plan an outdoor shoot around an hour of golden light and you will lose half of it. Plan around thirty minutes, and arrive ready before it starts.

Chennai sun times by month

Times are for the 15th of each month in Chennai (IST), calculated from the sun's position. They shift by only a few minutes either side of the 15th. "Golden light" here means the sun is less than 6° above the horizon.

First light — when the sky brightens before sunrise — is about 22 minutes before sunrise all year. It is soft and blue, and lovely for calm portraits before the sun appears.

What it means for a muhurtham

Many Tamil muhurthams fall between 4 and 7 am, which means the ceremony often starts in darkness and finishes in daylight. Around sunrise the light inside a mandapam changes minute by minute, from tungsten to blue dawn to warm sun through the doors. Photographers have to handle that change while the thaali is being tied.

If your muhurtham ends near sunrise, keep ten minutes free right after it for couple portraits outside the mandapam. It is the best natural light of the whole wedding. More in our early-morning muhurtham guide.

What it means for a pre-wedding shoot

  • Morning shoots are cooler, quieter and have fewer people on the beach — arrive 40 minutes before sunrise to be ready for first light.
  • Evening shoots are easier to schedule but places like Marina, Besant Nagar and the ECR beaches get crowded, and the light goes quickly after sunset.
  • Coastal haze often softens the sun just above the horizon in Chennai, so the best colour sometimes comes 10 to 15 minutes after sunrise rather than right at it.
  • November to February is the most comfortable season. April to June mornings are already hot by 7.30 am, so shoots need to finish early.

Evening receptions and outdoor ceremonies

For an outdoor or beach-side reception on ECR, schedule couple portraits for the half hour before sunset and start the stage after it. In November and December, sunset is at about 5:40 pm, so portraits need to begin by about 5:10 pm — earlier than most families expect.

Our guide to outdoor muhurtham venues on ECR covers wind, lawn orientation and timing at the venues themselves.

Frequently asked questions

What time is golden hour in Chennai?

Morning golden light runs from sunrise to about 30 minutes after it, and evening golden light from about 30 minutes before sunset until sunset. In January that is roughly 6:35–7:05 am and 5:30–6:00 pm; in June roughly 5:42–6:13 am and 6:05–6:36 pm.

How long is golden hour in Chennai?

About 30 minutes, morning and evening, all year round. Because Chennai is close to the equator the sun rises and sets steeply, so the low warm light is much shorter than the 'hour' quoted in most photography advice.

What is the best time for a pre-wedding shoot in Chennai?

Early morning, arriving about 40 minutes before sunrise, between November and February. The light is soft, the beaches are quiet and it is still cool. Evening shoots work too but locations are busier and the light fades fast after sunset.

What time is sunrise in Chennai for a wedding muhurtham?

Between about 5:42 am (early June) and 6:35 am (mid January). First light comes about 22 minutes earlier. Muhurthams that end near sunrise give the best natural light of the wedding for couple portraits.

What time should couple portraits start before an evening reception in Chennai?

About 30 to 40 minutes before sunset. In November and December that means starting around 5:00–5:10 pm, as sunset is close to 5:40 pm.
